West Jordan, Utah-based steel fabricator SME Steel plans to shut down operations at its Pocatello, Idaho plant, according to local media reports on Friday. Lost contracts led to the decision and initial layoffs have already started. While SME has plans to entirely cease production by the end of the month, SME hopes to restart production pending improved market conditions.
