The Russian steelmaker Severstal has announced that a fire broke out at its blast furnace No. 5 (BF No. 5), resulting in the death of one worker and injury to two others.

Operations at the BF No.5 have been stopped pending investigation.

According to Severstal's release on the issue, the early indications are that the fire may have been the result of the dispersal and subsequent ignition of the furnace's roofing materials, caused by the opening of the third Cowper stove in the upper part of the furnace.
