State-run, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is planning to set up a coastal Greenfield steel mill in eastern Indian state of Odisha, a company official said on Monday, June 3.
This will be SAIL’s second steel project in Odisha after its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) already operational in the state set up in the sixties with technical collaboration with Germany.
“We have received a very positive response from Odisha and will soon send a team to scout for a plot along Odisha coast as we had been planning a coastal steel mill for a long time,” SAIL chairman Anil Kumar Chaudhary said in a press statement.
According to tentative plan, the Greenfield steel mill will initially be constructed with a capacity of 3 million mt per year and subsequently increased to 6 million mt per year.
“Overall we plan to raise our capacity to 50 million mt per year in two phases by 2030-31. In the first phase till 2025-26 fiscal, we will take our capacity up to 35 million ton per year,” Chaudhary said.
During fiscal 2018-19 SAIL had produced 16.3 million mt and targeted to ramp this up to 17.5 million mt by the end of current fiscal.
