Germany-based plantmaker SMS Group has announced that South Korea-based steelmaker Taewoong has successfully cast 1,000 mm round bloom at its new three-strand continuous casting machine supplied by SMS Group’s Switzerland-based subsidiary SMS Concast.

The new three-strand continuous casting machine at Taewoong is designed for an annual capacity of 800,000 mt per year. The new caster is able to cast round blooms in diameters from 310 mm up to 1,000 mm. According to SMS, this marks a historical milestone in steel production technology, as it is the first caster in the world producing 1,000 mm blooms in a bent continuous casting process. The new machine is able to cast different sizes simultaneously in steel grades ranging from carbon and tool steels through stainless up to special alloy steels.
