According to the data released by the Russian Federation's Federal Customs Service, in 2009 Russia exported 27.880 million metric tons of ferrous metals (excluding pig iron, ferroalloys and scrap) - up 3.9 percent, 4.521 million metric tons of pig iron - down 14.2 percent, 14.04 million metric tons of semi-finished steel products - down 9.6 percent, 20.483 million metric tons of iron ore and concentrate - down nine percent, and 1.828 million metric tons of coke and semi-coke - down 39 percent, all compared to 2008. Meanwhile, in 2009, Russia registered a 33.3 percent increase year on year in its flat rolled product exports to 9.338 million metric tons and a 4.6 percent rise year on year in its ferroalloy exports to 786,400 metric tons.
On the other hand, in 2009, Russia decreased its ferrous metal imports (excluding pig iron, ferroalloys and scrap) by 29.7 percent to 3.259 million mt, and reduced its steel pipe imports by 38.5 percent to 583,600 mt, both compared to 2008.
