Rio Tinto to expand Hamersley Iron mines

Anglo-Australian mining company Rio Tinto announced plans to further expand its Hamersley Iron mines in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The company considers an investment of A$373 million ($290 million) for the expansion of mines. The project, which covers expansion of Tom Price and Marandoo mines and construction of new mine capacity at Nammuldi, is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2006. The project, which is subject to the government approval, will add 15 million tons to the existing capacity of Hamersley Iron mines for at least three years.
