Rostov Electrometallurgical Works (REMZ), a subsidiary of the Russian steel producer ESTAR Holding (ESTAR), is reported to be planning in mid-April this year to start pre-commissioning preparations at its new longs rolling mill 550/530 for the production of wire rod and rebar, with rebar production planned to be started in late May-early June.

REMZ's new rolling mill, with a designed capacity of 550,000 mt per year, will be able to produce rebar of 6-32 mm diameter and wire rod of 5.5-14 mm diameter.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, the installation of the new rolling mill is in fact the second stage of the construction of REMZ. The total investment in the project, the funding for which commenced in 2007 and was tied up during the financial crisis, will amount to Ruble 2.5-3 billion (about $81-97 million). Currently, REMZ produces just square billets, which are shipped for export.
