India’s Ministry of Steel has clarified that not only finished steel products but also intermediates will mandatorily require to carry quality certification from Indian Standards Institute (ISI), a government official said on Friday, August 24.
He said that every producer of intermediate steel products will have to get their product certified buy ISI and carry the ISI quality stamp on their products before supplies to downstream unit.
Citing an example, he said while thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) bars will have to be certified and carry and ISI stamp of quality, all intermediates like billets and ingots supplied to rolling mills too have to be certified and carry the ISI mark of quality.
Any rolling mill using intermediates without ISI quality certification will be liable to have all stocks of intermediates and finished steel products confiscated by regulatory authorities, the official said.
In effect no domestic supplier or foreign suppliers of either finished steel products or intermediates will be able to effect sales transactions without ISI certification, he added.
Earlier this year the Ministry of Steel under Mandatory Steel Quality Control Order 2018 made it compulsory for 50 steel and three stainless steel product categories to be certified by ISI and no non-certified products will be permitted for sales in the domestic market.
