Peruvian steelmaker Aceros Arequipa told local newspaper Diario Correo it has already dismissed 240 workers at its Pisco mill. The workers were dismissed effectively on May 13 until July 9, under Peruvian labor laws.
The company said, however, a regional labor authority in the Ica region issued a resolution on June 19 to annul Aceros Arequipa’s decision. The steelmaker said the regional labor authority decision was unfounded, claiming its provisional furlough met all national labor requirements.
The company said it appealed to a higher labor authority so it can maintain its original decision to lay off the 240 workers.
