At a meeting held in Lahore on Wednesday, a majority of members of an official Pakistani committee on "Development of the Steel Sector" favored the introduction of direct reduced iron (DRI) technology for steelmaking as an important pillar in the country's long-term steel policy.
The government is currently in the process of structuring its long-term policy targeting an annual steel production capacity of 10 million mt by 2015 and 15 million mt by 2020. The main object of the policy is to narrow the gap between steel demand and supply.
The officials and members of the committee emphasized that DRI technology is a more efficient, productive and energy-saving system.
