On September 28, Finnish stainless steel producer Outokumpu said that it is implementing a major energy saving project at its Tornio Works production site in Finland.

Accordingly, a total of 50 separate refrigeration compressors in the cold rolling plant will be replaced with a new centralized district cooling system. As a result, the annual electricity consumption will be reduced by 11 GWh. Additionally, the new system will decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 6,700 metric tons.

As part of the financing of the project in question, the Finnish government has granted a subsidy of about €2 million as it represents a major energy saving action.

The new system will be taken into use in Tornio by the end of 2011.
