Oregon Steel Mills again closes Portland meltshop

The US producer of specialty and commodity steel mill products for domestic and international markets, the minimill Oregon Steel Mills, Inc. plans to close down its Portland steel melting shop. At the Portland melt shop and heat treat facility; a semi-finished product steel slab is produced by means of melting scrap steel and junk autos. Currently, Oregon Steel is evaluating the cost of producing its own slabs or buying it from elsewhere, and will accordingly decide for a shut down. The industry reports refer to a possibility of 300 job cuts in case of such a shut down. The meltshop was again temporarily closed down in January by Oregon Steel, due to a large slab stock and a downturn of prices and demand for steel slab and pipe.
