The eastern Indian state of Odisha is aiming to become a steel manufacturing hub in India setting a target of creating an aggregate steelmaking capacity of 100 million mt per year by 2030, up from 32.42 million mt per year at present, an Odisha government official said on Tuesday, July 23.
The government official said that at present there are 47 steel mills located in Odisha with a total capacity of 32.42 million mt per year including two state-run steel company with combined installed capacity of 5.6 million mt per year.
The official said that the targeted increase in steel production capacity in Odisha will be through a combination of brownfield expansion of existing steel companies and greenfield projects by private steel companies.
In this context, the Odisha government has given the green light to JSW Limited’s 12 million mt per year greenfield steel mill in the region, while Tata Steel is expected to add another 5 million mt per year capacity to its existing 3 million mt per year steel mill located in the Kalinganagar industrial belt in the state, the official added.
