Nucor announced that it will invest an additional $40 million in its rebar and merchant bar mill in Kankakee, Illinois, adding to an existing $180 million plant expansion. The company said the majority of the investment will be used to upgrade machinery, including adding a state-of-the-art continuous casting machine.

Nucor said the new continuous casting machine will broaden the mill’s product offerings and utilize the mill’s full melt capacity.

The $180 million expansion, which was started in late 2018 and is expected to be complete by 2020, is focused on increased merchant bar production. The added capacity will allow the plant to produce approximately 500,000 tons of steel annually.
