Nizhny Tagil Iron and Steel Works (NTMK), a subsidiary of the Russian steel producer Evraz Group, has stopped operations at its open hearth shop and blooming mill, due to the decrease in orders and the unit's outdated production technologies.

According to Evraz's human resources vice president Natalia Ionova, the open hearth shop and blooming mill were not modernized during the plant's stable period of work and were operating on old equipment, causing in addition an environmental load for the plant.

In addition, Mrs. Ionova stated that most workers at the open hearth shop and blooming mill will transferred to other workshops at the same plant.

According to the data issued by the human resources vice president, in January-March 2009 a total of 1,000 workers were dismissed at NTMK.
