After a necessary stoppage in production in 2006, Moldavian Metallurgical Works (MMZ) has been able to restore 2005 production levels, the plant's officials have announced. In 2006, MMZ produced 675,500 metric tons of crude steel, and 639,000 metric tons of finished steel products. In 2005, however, the plant had produced 1.05 million metric tons of crude steel and 890,000 metric tons of finished steel products. For 2007, MMZ plans to produce 950,000 metric tons of crude steel and 836,600 metric tons of finished steel products. The main problem of the plant is still scarcity of scrap. As the MMZ officials stressed, the scrap for their plant is delivered in very small volumes, while its price is very high.
