The Russian steelmaker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has announced that its 50.0000045 percent-owned joint venture company with one of the leading Turkish mining companies Atakas, MMK-Atakas A.S., has chosen Italian company Danieli to become the main equipment supplier for the JV's production sites in Turkey.
According to the agreement, Danieli will supply all necessary equipment for both of MMK-Atakas A.S.'s production sites which are located in Iskenderun and Istanbul.
The ordered equipment includes an electric arc furnace (EAF) with an annual production capacity of 2.4 million metric tons, twin ladle furnace unit, twin vacuum degasser, a CSP complex comprised of a two-strand near-net-shape slab caster and a hot rolling mill, a continuous pickling line, a two-stand reversing cold rolling mill, two galvanizing lines, and two color coating lines.
The new MMK-Atakas A.S. facilities will be located on the two sites, with main production to be installed in Iskenderun and the second site in Istanbul. The production capacity of the new plant will be 2.3 million metric tons of hot rolled steel, 750,000 metric tons of cold rolled steel, 900,000 metric tons of galvanized coils and 400,000 metric tons of color coated steel products.
In addition, the JV is planning to establish two service centers, one in Iskenderun and one in Istanbul.
To facilitate the delivery of raw material to Iskenderun on the one hand and of finished steel products from Iskenderun on the other, a sea port will be built at the Iskenderun facility.
The implementation of the project will take approximately three years at a cost of approximately $1.7 billion.
