Russian steel producer Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has announced that it has invested RUB 1.64 billion ($28.05 million) in renovating and building new environmental facilities in the first six months of the current year. The initiatives are part of the MMK annual environmental program designed to minimize the impact of production facility and unit operations on the environment.
MMK stated that recently the reconstruction of the sulphur collection unit No. 2 in the sintering plant has been completed. As a result, all gas leaving sinter plant No. 2 can now be purified of sulphur dioxide (SO2) to a level reaching 95 percent purity (in line with the EU best practices). Furthermore, a new aspiration system for foundries at blast furnace No. 10 has been put into operation, which will enable a dust emissions reduction of more than 320 metric tons per year.
