MIIT: China’s coke output rises by 0.8 percent in 2018

In 2018, China’s coke output amounted to 438 million mt, up 0.8 percent year on year, as announced by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

In the given year, China exported 9.75 million mt of coke, up 20.8 percent year on year, with the average export price of coke at RMB 1,999/mt ($295.3/mt), up 10.3 percent year on year.

In 2018, due to the rising prices of coal and finished steel, coke prices also increased. For instance, in the given year the average price of coke of specification larger than 40 mm was recorded at RMB 2,190/mt ($323.5/mt), up 13.4 percent, while the average price of coke of specification in the range of 25-40mm was recorded at RMB 2,119/mt (313.0/mt), up 13.3 percent, both year on year.

Meanwhile, the coking industry registered improved profitability in the given year. In particular, the operating revenue of the coking industry in Shanxi Province amounted to RMB 187.28 billion ($27.7 billion), up 19.8 percent year on year, while the gross profit of the coking industry in Shanxi totaled RMB 17.75 billion ($2.62 billion), rising by 120.2 percent year on year.
