Mexico’s seamless rolled rings and open-die forgings producer Frisa expects to start-up a specialty steel mill in the city of García, Nuevo León, by march 2016, it said.
According to media reports, the Mexican plant has invested more than $100 million at the new plant, which is expected to substitute steel imports from Europe, Asia and the US.
“The plant will have an electric arc furnace as well as last-generation equipment for the refining and molding of specialty steel, which is not produced in Mexico,” said Carlos Garza, director at Frisa’s steelmaking division.
The new plant will have an annual capacity of 300,000 mt to produce steel billets from 30 cm diameter to 1.5 meters of diameter and weight of up to 50 mt.
About 95 percent of Frisa’s rolled rings are destined to the export market. According to media reports, the new specialty plant will provide Frisa more than 80 percent of what it needs to manufacture parts for turbines, as well as to attend the mining and power generation industries.
