Mexico is eyeing increased trade ties with China, with a potential free trade agreement involving the two countries, a Mexican news agency said, citing a local official.
Mexico’s former ambassador for China, Sergio Ley Lopez, said improved relations with China would bring benefits for both countries, especially now in a context of a trade war initiated by the US.
Lopez said in an investment forum an agreement between the two nations would “boost Mexico's economic growth and support the country's position more rapidly among the ten largest economies in the world.”
China has been a key partner of other Latin American countries, including Brazil, in areas like energy and transport infrastructure. Lopez suggested Mexico to “diversify” its trade agreements with other partners like China, as the NAFTA agreement is discussed.
