Mexico has intensified NAFTA negotiations with the US, as the two countries have their fourth consecutive week of bilateral meetings, according to a report from a Mexican news agency. Other media reports said Mexico expects negotiations to end this month, with the country seeking a “trilateral” agreement.

The negotiations are continuing even as the US investigates auto imports under Section 232, which could result in further tariffs on Mexican and Canadian autos and parts.

The US reportedly indicated last week that if Mexican autos don’t comply with the regional content rules that may be be set in the new agreement, then there could be higher tariffs. The idea was rejected by the Mexican government, a media report from El Universal noted.

Citing unnamed sources, El Universal noted negotiations need to advance fast for the next 17 days.
