Mexican steel exports fall, but imports rise in January

Mexico’s export of steel products fell 2.1 percent in January 2015 at 0.38 million tons, while in January 2014 the total reached 0.39 million tons, according to CANACERO. Finished steel imports into Mexico increased by 29.5 percent year-on-year in January.

Imports totaled 1.14 million tons, up from the previous year’s figure of 880,000 tons. The US was the largest exporter of finished steel to Mexico, followed by South Korea and China. In January, imports from South Korea and China grew by 154.7 percent and 179.8 percent, respectively, Canacero said. These two countries combined accounted for 32.9 percent of Mexico’s total steel imports the first month of 2015, up from 16.1 percent in January 2014. Meanwhile, combined imports from the US and Canada made up 41.3 percent of the total in January, down from January 2014’s figure of 54.6 percent.
