Mexican production and auto sales decline in May

Mexican auto production, domestic sales and exports saw steep declines in May as a result of Covid-19, according to data released by automotive industry association, AMIA.

AMIA said Mexican production of vehicles in May plummeted 93.6 percent, year-on-year, to 22,119 units. Domestic car sales in May dropped 58.9 percent, year-on-year, to 42,028 units, while Mexican exports of vehicles in the same period decreased 95 percent, year-on-year, to 15,088 units.

According to AMIA, Mexican output of autos in the accumulated period of January to May reached 934,234 units, 43.1 percent down, year-on-year. Domestic sales of cars in the January-May period declined 30 percent, year-on-year, to 373,608 units. Likewise, Mexican exports of vehicles in January-May decreased 42.3 percent, year-on-year, to 822,246 units.
