The Mexican Mining Chamber, Camimex, which represents 90 percent of Mexico’s mining activity, asked the US government to keep the sector under consideration as North America re-opens post-pandemic, it said in a statement.

Camimex represents companies like Minera Autlan, a key Mexican ferroalloys and manganese producer. The Camimex letter was sent to the US ambassador to Mexico, Christopher Landau.

Camimex said the Mexican mining segment is a “big exporter to the US, both directly and indirectly,” and asked the US official to consider the industry in the US-Mexico talks, as the two countries eventually discuss a re-opening post-pandemic.

Unlike the steel industry, the mining segment wasn’t considered “essential” in Mexico, Camimex said.

Camimex said the non-recognition of the mining industry as a key area might result in a “collapse” of the supply chain for other industries as well, including the automotive, aerospace, the agribusiness, and civil construction segments.
