Mexican auto production and domestic sales decline in April

Sharply declining domestic sales, auto production and auto exports in April are indications of the impact Covid-19 had on the Mexican automotive industry. Automotive industry association AMIA said Mexican production of vehicles in April plummeted 98.7 percent, year-on-year, to 3,722 units, from 300,106 units in April 2019.

AMIA said domestic sales of cars in April totaled 34,903 units, 64.5 percent down, year-on-year. Mexican exports of autos in April dropped to 27,889 units from 284,471 units in April 2019, 90.2 percent down, year-on-year.

As for the accumulated period of January to April, Mexican production of autos decreased 29.5 percent, year-on-year, to 912,115 units. Domestic sales of vehicles in the January-April period reached 331,580 units, 23.1 percent down, year-on-year. Likewise, Mexican exports of cars in the January-April period diminished 28.03 percent, year-on-year, to 807,158 units.
