Mechel, one of the leading Russian mining and steel groups, has announced that its crude steel output in the first quarter of the current year decreased by 21 percent to 1.3 million mt compared to the same period of last year.

In January-March this year, Mechel’s pig iron output declined by five percent to 972,000 mt, while its coal production remained stable at the level of 6.406 million mt, both year on year.

In the given period, the company's steam coal sales saw a three percent increase year on year to 1.551 million mt, primarily due to increased supplies to the group’s power enterprises, especially Southern Kuzbass Power Plant, which increased electricity generation due to seasonal factors. In the same period, coking coal sales in the first quarter this year decreased by 11 percent and anthracite sales decreased by 12 percent, while pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal sales went up by 62 percent, all year on year.
