India’s JSW Limited will shortly commence construction of its 12 million mt per year steel mill project in the eastern state of Odisha upon successful completion of a public hearing and consent of the local population to the project, a state government official said on Monday January 20.
The JSW project is to be built near Paradip port in Odisha which had previously been earmarked for a similar steel mill project conceived by South Korea’s POSCO in 2005 but later abandoned by the latter.
“JSW’s public hearing was conducted peacefully and successfully. This is a huge development. The integrated steel mill project has been passed unopposed with almost the same investment that was looked at earlier by POSCO. We expect to start work soon on the INR 537 billion ($7.56 billion) through a separate company - Utkal Steel Limited,” Nitin B Jawale, managing director of Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited (IPICOL), said.
The project will be built on 2,980 acres of land near Paradip Port and will include a 12 million mt per annum steel mill, a 10 million mt per annum cement plant and a 900 MW captive thermal power plant, he added.
