JSW Steel, one of the largest Indian steelmakers, has posted a 15 percent year-on-year increase in crude steel production to 8.52 million mt in the financial year 2012-13 ended March 31, 2013.

According to the company’s statement, in last fiscal year JSW Steel produced 6.28 million mt of flat rolled products, up 17 percent, while its long rolled product output amounted to 1.8 million mt, increasing by 18 percent, both compared to the previous fiscal year.

Meanwhile, in fourth quarter of the financial year 2012-13, JSW Steel’s crude steel production increased by two percent to 2.109 million mt, compared to 2.067 million mt in the corresponding quarter of the financial year 2011-12. During the fourth quarter of FY 2012-13, JSW Steel produced 1.6 million mt of flat rolled products, up 11 percent, while its long rolled product output amounted to 438,000 mt, decreasing by six percent, both year on year.

According to JSW, the capacity utilization at its Vijayanagar works remained at 80 percent during FY 2012-13 despite the constraints in availability of iron ore in the southern Indian province of Karnataka. With its unique low grade iron ore beneficiation capacity, JSW Steel has managed to maintain Viyayanagar’s capacity utilization rate at high levels.
