JSW Steel USA is halting plans to construct a new EAF at its Baytown, Texas plate mill, according to a source from JSW.

The company announced in March 2018 that it planned to invest $500 million in a multi-phase projet at Baytown, including the installation of a new electric arc furnace. Separately, the company is in the process of ramping up production at its 1.5 million mt per year EAF and caster in Ohio.

"It's more economically feasible to put money into an existing EAF in Ohio than continue installing a new one in Bay Town, Texas," a source told SteelOrbis. "JSW will now acquire slabs for Bay Town from the new Ohio melt shop to melt and manufacture plate in the US, much faster."
