In October this year, Japan's iron and steel product exports amounted to 2.86 million metric tons, down 6.7 percent month on month and falling by 8.5 percent year on year, according to the customs statistics released by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF).

In the January-October period of this year, Japanese iron and steel product exports amounted to 28.3 million mt, declining by 7.7 percent, compared to the same period of 2018.

Regarding Japan's major iron and steel product export markets, in the first ten months of the year, the country's iron and steel exports to South Korea totaled 4.6 million metric tons, up 2.1 percent, while exports to China decreased by 9.7 percent to 4.17 million metric tons, the export volume to Taiwan amounted to 1.84 million metric tons, down by 22.4 percent, exports to Thailand totaled 4.42 million metric tons, falling by 9.4 percent, while exports to the US totaled 1.13 million metric tons, falling by 11.9 percent, all year on year.

While Japan’s exports of hot rolled coil (HRC) increased in the January-October period, the decline in the overall steel exports from the country was attributed to lower semi-finished steel exports, SteelOrbis understands.
