In the January-November period last year, Italy's steel imports from non-European Union (EU) countries totaled 10.565 million metric tons, up 1.0 percent, while its steel exports to non-EU destinations amounted to 3.972 million metric tons, up 5.2 percent, both year on year, as per data issued by the Italian steel producers association Federacciai.

In particular, in the given period imports of long products from non-EU countries decreased by 38.1 percent year on year. Wire rod imports were down 43.8 percent year on year to 199,000 mt, mainly due to the EU safeguard on steel products and partly due to mostly-competitive prices in the domestic market, according to SteelOrbis sources.

Italy’s flat steel imports from non-EU countries in the same period declined by 3.6 percent year on year. Among the most imported flat steel products from non-EU countries in the given period were coils (3.265 million mt, up 3.0 percent), cold rolled plate (773,000 mt, down 5.0 percent) and hot dip galvanized plate (706,000 mt, up 0.9 percent, year on year).

Concerning Italian exports to non-EU countries in the first 11 months of 2019, long product exports decreased by 3.6 percent, while flat product exports increased by 13.8 percent, both year on year. In particular, rebar exports decreased by 1.1 percent to 518,000 mt, wire rod exports declined by 6.0 percent to 362,000 mt, while steel coil exports were up 131.6 percent to 167,000 mt, all year on year.

Lastly, in the January-November period last year, Italian seamless pipe exports to non-EU countries totaled 370,000 mt, while Italian welded pipe exports came to 413,000 mt, increasing respectively by 7.6 percent and 21.5 percent compared to the same period of 2018.

The details are presented in the following table, with units of measurement in thousand metric tons.
