With its legislative decree 100/2011, Italy will start to implement the European directive 'Euratom' concerning the supervision and control of shipments of radioactive and spent nuclear fuel waste, as well as the monitoring of radiometric material or semi-finished metal products.

The objective of the decree is to strengthen the protection of workers and of the population against the risks of ionizing radiations, and to protect the environment from contamination caused by radiations.

The new decree requires all "the subjects that, for industrial or commercial purposes, are engaged in import, collection, storage or melting of scrap metal or other metallic materials", as well as those subjects who "import metal semi-finished products", to perform a radiometric reading to detect the presence of abnormal levels of radioactivity.

The decree 100/2011 will enter into force on July 22.
