Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte stated in the Italian parliament on July 1, "Steel production is essential for our economic fabric and a strategic plan is needed to define Italy's steel needs and the market conditions in which the players have to move and which includes elements of commercial protection."

"The relaunch of the steel sector also passes through specialization in quality steel for the benefit of high value-added chains, together with the electrical engineering and precision mechanics industries in which Italy is the leader," the prime minister said, adding, "An energy transition is needed and this sector must move in this direction.”

Prime minister Conte said such a plan will "obviously take into account the crises to be resolved," i.e., the ones concerning the former Taranto-based Ilva, Terni-based ThyssenKrupp Acciai Speciali Terni, and Piombino-based JSW Italy.
