ISA demands duty hike for steel imports

The Indian Steel Alliance (ISA), on behalf of major Indian steel producers, demanded that the government increase duties on imported steel in order to protect domestic steel producers from cheap imports. Essar Steel, Jindal Vijaynagar Steel Ltd, Ispat and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL) asked ISA to persuade the government to raise the import duty on steel to 15%. The current duty is 5%. ISA claims that the prices of imported steel products, being lower than that of domestic prices, cause material injury to the domestic producers. Certain steelmakers reportedly plan to file antidumping cases in order to protect their interests. Cheap imports into India originate mainly from Russia, Ukraine and Romania.
