Iran’s iron and steel imports fall by 18 percent

Iran imported 9.5 million mt of iron and steel in the last Iranian year (21.03.2008-20.03.2009), down 18 percent compared to the 11.6 million mt imported in the previous year, according to the newly published figures from the Iranian customs authorities. The economic stagnation in Iran in line with the global trend has been indicated as the main reason for the drop in imports.

Meanwhile, Iran exported 688,000 mt of iron and steel in the last Iranian year, compared to 1,363,000 mt in the previous year.
 
Note: the above figues include all items of iron and steel classified under chapter 72 of the HS tariffs.
