India's request for flexibility with subsidy ban to be evaluated

The work in progress to eliminate the state subsidies on steel worldwide worry the developing countries as they believe their steel consumption per capita is not as high as those with developed economies. India is one of these developing countries requesting some flexibility with the implementations to come in line with this subsidy ban such as environmental projects, technical upgrades, infrastructure development etc. Industry reports refer to a possibility of a US delegation to visit India in order to examine these requests and evaluate the exact situation of the Indian steel industry in this respect. This assessment is expected to take place prior to the OECD meetings scheduled to take place on May 13, 2003 in Paris, the OECD headquarters.
