Indian private sector steel producer Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) has completed delivery of 126,000 mt of steel rails to the national transporter Indian Railways (IR), a company statement issued on Wednesday, July 31, said.

According to the statement, JSPL last year received an order from IR for supply of 100,000 mt of steel rails, which was subsequently increased by 26,000 mt.

Significantly, the order for supply of steel rails placed by IR with JSPL was the first time that the transporter sourced rails from a private steel mill as government steel company, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) had been until then the sole domestic supplier of steel rails for IR’s track renewal and replacement program.

The total value of the steel rails supplied by JSPL to IR is estimated at $108 million.

The JSPL statement said that the company expects a further order for about 200,000 mt of steel rail directly from Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, IR’s engineering and construction arm.
