Indian domestic stainless steel producers have complained to the government that stainless steel importers are circumventing antidumping (AD) duty rates applicable for shipments from China taking advantage of loopholes in the duty notification, a senior government official said on Wednesday, August 23.
The official said that domestic stainless steel producers have alleged that importers are shipping in stainless steel of widths above 1,250 mm and customizing it to a narrower width at ports of arrival to circumvent the antidumping duty applicable.
The government has imposed an antidumping duty of 57 percent on stainless steel imports from China, with the duty notification indicating that the rate is effective on stainless steel of widths up to 1,250 mm.
According to the official, domestic producers in their complaint said that the antidumping duty has been rendered largely ineffective in curbing shipments from China with importers taking advantage of the ambiguity over the width of imported steel.
