Indian finished steel output undershoots its target

India's finished steel production during the April 2004-February 2005 period fell short of government's target. According to the latest reports, the country's overall finished steel production amounted to 36.08 million tons during the April 2004-February 2005 period. This figure is 10.2% less than the government's target of 40.19 million tons. Finished steel production, however, showed a 3.2% rise compared to the actual production recorded in the same period last year. The shortfall in the production is attributed to the lower performance of Indian steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) plants and secondary producers.
