According to India’s Joint Plant Committee, Indian crude steel production in Q1 FY 2020 (April through June 2019) hit 27.72 million mt, 3 percent higher quarter-on-quarter. The 27.72 million mt in Q1 FY2020 is 26 percent of the 106.4 million mt in the complete FY 2019.
Consumption reached 25.187 million in Q1 FY2020, up almost 7 percent compared to 23.584 million mt in the same quarter the previous fiscal year. In regards to producers, the large mills of ESL, JSWL, and JSPL contributed 28 percent of the crude steel production level together. SAIL produced 14 percent, Tata Steel 12 percent and RINL 5 percent while other producers constituted the other 42 percent of total crude steel production.
Finished steel exports were 1.015 million mt in Q1 FY2020, down 27 compared to the same quarter the previous fiscal year. India is establishing policies to increase finished steel exports over the next five years.
