India will achieve domestic steel production of 300 million mt per year well before the target year of 2030 and so the government will aim to focus on a policy on allied mineral inputs like manganese, chrome and iron ore to sustain growth in steel production, a government official said on Wednesday, October 10.
“Going by the present trend both in terms of consumption and production, domestic steel production of 300 million mt will come much before 2030 as laid down in the National Steel Policy unveiled in 2017,” secretary to the Ministry of Steel, Binoy Kumar, said.
Mr. Kumar said that, while in the case of growing iron ore production to keep pace with growth in steel production, state-run miner NMDC Limited will have to take the lead, the government will need to have a special comprehensive policy encompassing all critical input for steelmaking like availability of domestic supplies of chrome ore and manganese.
