India’s Ministry of Steel has brought 53 steel product categories accounting for 90 percent of products consumed in the country under its mandatory quality control order and will ensure that 100 percent of steel products will be covered under the order before the end of the current year, a senior government official said on Monday, July 15.

The official said that, by bringing 100 percent of steel products under the mandatory quality control order, the government will be able to significantly check the production, import, use and trade in inferior quality of steel used in critical sectors like electrical equipment manufacturing, construction and infrastructure projects.

Under the mandatory quality control order, no steel product can be produced, sold, traded, imported or stocked without certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Domestic steel producers will need to obtain BIS certification for each notified steel product, while foreign suppliers who need to supply these products will also have to secure BIS registration.
