India is likely to miss its 2020 deadline for introduction of mandatory vehicle scrapping policy, government sources said on Thursday, August 30.
The sources said that the Ministry of Transport which is spearheading mandatory scrapping of commercial vehicles 15 years or older backed by the Ministry of Steel aimed at higher domestic generation of steel scrap had submitted the policy to the Prime Minister’s Office for final approval.
But the proposal has been sent back to the Ministry of Transport seeking more detailed consultations with various sector of the road transport sector and aligning the mandatory scrapping policy with automobile emission norms and backed by strong evidence of scrapping of vehicles leading to lower targeting emission and environmental norms, the sources said.
It was pointed out that the apex level of the government sought a more detailed study of the policy and its linkages with various parameters and not just aimed at generation of steel scrap to boost steel production by secondary steel mills.
