The Indian government has issued new quality standards for several steel products aimed to check imports, a government official said on Thursday, January 23.

The official said that these steel products will have to adhere to standards laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards or they will be barred from being shipped into the country.

According to a notification issued by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, these products will have to conform to the standards laid down and will have to carry the “BIS” mark under license from BIS to be eligible for trade within the country, the official said.

The notification will come into effect from August 1, 2020.

The products include steel tubes, tubular and other wrought iron fittings, steel tubes for structures and water wells.
