India is dependent on imported scrap

Following the explosion caused by the scrap containers that carried explosives, Indian Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has announced that India is dependent upon imported scrap. The scrap requirement of India for the current fiscal is reportedly 1.5 million tons. The Minister stated that due to limited availability of scrap in India, the country is dependent on imported scrap. The Minister also stated that in the first five months of the fiscal (April-August 04) 783'700 tons of iron and steel scrap was imported.
