India has imposed mandatory quality checks for certification of imports of three flat rolled stainless steel products, an official from the Ministry of Steel said on Tuesday, August 4.
Under the order issued, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) set the minimum quality standards for these three stainless steel products, aiming to curb imports of these products from China, Malaysia and South Korea which saw a sharp surge over the past few months, the official said.
The products for which quality standards have been set, including mandatory certification necessary for production as well as trade, are stainless steel sheets and strips, nickel austenitic stainless steel and stainless steel plates.
These products for mandatory quality certification will be added to 15 other steel products for which mandatory quality standards and certification were already announced earlier this year.
In June, the Indian government had raised import duty on carbon steel by 2.5 percentage points and also imposed antidumping duty of $416/mt on stainless steel product imports from Japan, South Korea and China.
