According to Chadhary Birender Singh, the Minister for Steel in India, a quality control order supported by the Bureau of Indian Standards will soon cover all steel products. He noted that the percentage of steel products under the quality regime is 86 percent at the moment and the goal for the ministry is 100 percent.

With full quality controls, the ministry wishes to eradicate the presence of inferior quality products in crucial uses including construction. The First Construction Council (FCC) recently reported on rampant production of inferior quality Thermo-Mechanically Tested (TMT) bars where 69 percent of brands failed testing. The testing followed a series of collapses of structures including bridges. The FCC also recommended better quality raw materials usage and the expansion of billet capacity in the country.
