Several Canadian and US mayors have gathered to unite voices in speaking against the negative effects from the recently instituted Section 232 tariffs on Canada at the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative annual conference in Ajax, Ontario. The mayors note that the economies in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River area are tightly integrated and the imposition of trade tariffs impact both sides of the border. The mayors cautioned against isolationist trade policies. Niagara Falls, New York, Mayor Paul Dyster support their Canadian counterparts “in the face of escalating rhetoric that threatens to damage 200 years of peace and economic prosperity in the region.” The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region which encompasses Quebec, Ontario and the eight Great Lake states is equivalent to the world’s third-largest economy.
