German crude steel output decreases by 27 percent in May

In May this year, Germany’s crude steel output decreased by 27 percent year on year to 2.56 million metric tons, according to the information provided by the German steel federation Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl (WV Stahl). German crude steel output decreased significantly in the given month amid the impact of the coronavirus crisis, following the 24 percent year-on-year decline recorded in April.

In the January-May period, crude steel production in Germany declined by 13.5 percent year on year to 14.98 million mt. Germany’s pig iron output amounted to 1.54 million mt in May this year, down 30.4 percent, and decreased by 15 percent to 9.46 million mt in the January-May period, both year on year.

The country’s hot rolled steel output decreased by 28.3 percent to 2.17 million mt in May, while declining by 12.2 percent to 13.09 million mt in the first five months, both compared to the respective periods of the previous year.
